Speech Therapy
To be an effective communicator, it is important for others to understand you when you speak. If you are having continued difficulty saying words or sounds correctly, organizing sounds within speech, and/or planning speech movements, speech therapy is recommended. We use a variety of methods to assess oral structures and function (how the lips, tongue, and jaw move during speech) to create a personalized therapy plan.
WHO COULD BENEFIT?
-
Most children can say almost all sounds correctly by the age of 5.
-
If a 3-year-old isn't able to be understood by strangers about 75% of the time (90-100% for 4-year-olds) then a speech assessment is recommended.
-
A lateral lisp (airflow out the sides of the mouth) is atypical and should be assessed as early as possible.
-
A child struggling with /r/ and/or a child with forward tongue placement with sounds /t, d, n, l, s, z, sh, ch/ could have an underlying orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD)
-
If your child has received traditional speech therapy for a long period of time without seeing signs of improvement, a holistic approach to diagnosing and treating speech sound disorders is recommended for finding the underlying root cause.
